Every three years, licensed architects in New York State are required to complete continuing education credits (or units) to maintain their certification. Continuing education credits are education or experiential learning opportunities for design professionals, often in the form of more traditional classroom instruction or field site visits, and are required by New York State to keep professional knowledge in the design community current.
One of the main pillars of improving the permitting experience of our local partners in the design community is communication. We hope to achieve this by creating a better and more transparent communication of policies and processes, and advancing the quality of the working relationships between City staff and local design professionals. Starting in 2020, the City of Syracuse will be partner with the Central New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects to offer Continuing Education courses for architects in the Central New York region on topics pertaining to municipal permitting and zoning. These courses, guided by City staff members, will be offered quarterly starting on February 18th, 2020 (Click HERE to register).
The first continuing education credit course will be titled “Navigating the Municipal Permitting Process”. During this course, City of Syracuse staff from the Central Permit Office, the Fire Prevention Bureau, and the City Zoning Administration, will provide an overview of the municipal permitting process, discuss recent changes to the process, and highlight important aspects of the permits, fire, and zoning review process for design professionals.
We plan on hosting a different course each quarter. Future continuing education courses include:
Navigating NYS Building Code
Zoning within the permitting process → ReZone
Most common plan review errors
Syracuse Property Conservation Code
NYS Variances
Permitting Panel (Q & A)
Leveraging technology in City permitting
“Demo” plan review
“Field Trip” (Inspection-oriented)
We are looking forward to partnering with the local architecture and design community.
